那時候，非利士人聚集他們的軍兵，合成一支軍隊，要與以色列人爭戰。亞吉對大衛說：「你要確切知道：你和你的部下要隨我出征。」大衛對亞吉說：「很好，你會知道僕人能做什麼。」亞吉就對大衛說：「這樣，我必立你終身作我的護衛長。」

於是亞吉召來大衛，對他說：「我指著耶和華的永生起誓：你是正直人，你跟我一起在軍中出入，這事在我眼中看為好，因為自從你來到我這裡那天起，直到今天，我在你身上找不到任何過犯。只是你在首領們眼中看為不好。現在你回去，平平安安地走吧！不要做非利士的首領們眼中看為惡的事。」

於是他們派人招聚非利士眾首領到他們那裡，問：「我們該怎麼處理以色列神的約櫃呢？」首領們回答：「可以把以色列神的約櫃轉移到迦特去。」他們就把以色列神的約櫃轉移了。他們把它轉移過去之後，耶和華的手臨到那城，引起極大的恐慌；他擊打那城的人，無論老少都長出了腫物。因此他們把神的約櫃送到以革倫。當神的約櫃來到以革倫的時候，以革倫人就哀叫說：「他們把以色列神的約櫃轉移到我們這裡了，要害死我們和我們的民眾啊！」他們就派人招聚非利士眾首領，說：「把以色列神的約櫃送走吧！讓它回到原處，免得害死我們和我們的民眾。」對死亡的恐慌彌漫全城，神的手重重地壓在那裡。

非利士人就問：「我們應該帶給他什麼賠罪的禮物呢？」他們回答：「按著非利士首領的數目，帶上五個金腫物和五隻金老鼠，因為同一個瘟疫臨到了你們所有的人和你們的首領們。
