那时候，非利士人聚集他们的军兵，合成一支军队，要与以色列人争战。亚吉对大卫说：“你要确切知道：你和你的部下要随我出征。”大卫对亚吉说：“很好，你会知道仆人能做什么。”亚吉就对大卫说：“这样，我必立你终身作我的护卫长。”

于是亚吉召来大卫，对他说：“我指着耶和华的永生起誓：你是正直人，你跟我一起在军中出入，这事在我眼中看为好，因为自从你来到我这里那天起，直到今天，我在你身上找不到任何过犯。只是你在首领们眼中看为不好。现在你回去，平平安安地走吧！不要做非利士的首领们眼中看为恶的事。”

于是他们派人招聚非利士众首领到他们那里，问：“我们该怎么处理以色列神的约柜呢？”首领们回答：“可以把以色列神的约柜转移到迦特去。”他们就把以色列神的约柜转移了。他们把它转移过去之后，耶和华的手临到那城，引起极大的恐慌；他击打那城的人，无论老少都长出了肿物。因此他们把神的约柜送到以革伦。当神的约柜来到以革伦的时候，以革伦人就哀叫说：“他们把以色列神的约柜转移到我们这里了，要害死我们和我们的民众啊！”他们就派人招聚非利士众首领，说：“把以色列神的约柜送走吧！让它回到原处，免得害死我们和我们的民众。”对死亡的恐慌弥漫全城，神的手重重地压在那里。

非利士人就问：“我们应该带给他什么赔罪的礼物呢？”他们回答：“按着非利士首领的数目，带上五个金肿物和五只金老鼠，因为同一个瘟疫临到了你们所有的人和你们的首领们。
