But David thought to himself,“ One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”

大闢慮後日為掃羅所害、不如速遁於非利士人地。掃羅見我不在以色列四境、必不索我、我可脫其手。

大衛意謂、恐後有一日、我終亡於掃羅手、不如奔非利士地、掃羅見我不在以色列境內、必絕望不復索我、我乃可脫其手、

David thought,“ Some day Saul will destroy me. So the best thing I can do is escape. I’ll go to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop looking for me everywhere in Israel. His hand won’t be able to reach me.”

Then David said in his heart,“ Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.”

But David kept thinking to himself,“ Someday Saul is going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for me in Israelite territory, and I will finally be safe.”

David said to himself,“ One of these days I’ll be swept away by Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape immediately to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me everywhere in Israel, and I’ll escape from him.”

Then David said to himself,“ Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to safely escape into the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of searching for me anymore in all the territory of Israel, and I will escape from his hand.”

And David said in his heart,“ Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand.”

And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel,“ My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God”?Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.

He said to his disciples,“ Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Didn’t we say to you in Egypt,‘ Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!

“ Don’t be afraid,” he said.“ My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.”

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

“ I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,

In those days the Philistines gathered their forces to fight against Israel. Achish said to David,“ You must understand that you and your men will accompany me in the army.”David said,“ Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do.” Achish replied,“ Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life.”

in my alarm I said,“ Everyone is a liar.”

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:“ In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.You said,‘ No, we will flee on horses.’ Therefore you will flee! You said,‘ We will ride off on swift horses.’ Therefore your pursuers will be swift!

That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.But the servants of Achish said to him,“ Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one they sing about in their dances:“‘ Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath.So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.Achish said to his servants,“ Look at the man! He is insane! Why bring him to me?Am I so short of madmen that you have to bring this fellow here to carry on like this in front of me? Must this man come into my house?”

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”

But the prophet Gad said to David,“ Do not stay in the stronghold. Go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.

When Achish asked,“ Where did you go raiding today?” David would say,“ Against the Negev of Judah” or“ Against the Negev of Jerahmeel” or“ Against the Negev of the Kenites.”He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought,“ They might inform on us and say,‘ This is what David did.’” And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory.

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.“ You of little faith,” he said,“ why did you doubt?”

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

As the Philistine rulers marched with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men were marching at the rear with Achish.The commanders of the Philistines asked,“ What about these Hebrews?” Achish replied,“ Is this not David, who was an officer of Saul king of Israel? He has already been with me for over a year, and from the day he left Saul until now, I have found no fault in him.”But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said,“ Send the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master’s favor than by taking the heads of our own men?Isn’t this the David they sang about in their dances:“‘ Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?So Achish called David and said to him,“ As surely as the Lord lives, you have been reliable, and I would be pleased to have you serve with me in the army. From the day you came to me until today, I have found no fault in you, but the rulers don’t approve of you.Now turn back and go in peace; do nothing to displease the Philistine rulers.”“ But what have I done?” asked David.“ What have you found against your servant from the day I came to you until now? Why can’t I go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”Achish answered,“ I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders have said,‘ He must not go up with us into battle.’Now get up early, along with your master’s servants who have come with you, and leave in the morning as soon as it is light.”So David and his men got up early in the morning to go back to the land of the Philistines, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it,and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.

The Lord said to Samuel,“ How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

When the Lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler over Israel,

For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn— conflicts on the outside, fears within.
