So David set out and went to the place where Saul was camped. David saw the place where Saul and Abner son of Ner, the general in command of his army, were sleeping. Now Saul was lying in the entrenchment, and the army was camped all around him.

大闢遂起至掃羅營、觀掃羅及其軍長、尼耳之子押尼耳所駐之地、車乘排列、掃羅寢於其所、從者四周建營。

Now as Saul watched David going out to fight the Philistine, he asked Abner, the general in command of the army,“ Whose son is this young man, Abner?” Abner replied,“ As surely as you live, O king, I don’t know.”

The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the general in command of his army was Abner son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

So David got up early in the morning and entrusted the flock to someone else who would watch over it. After loading up, he went just as Jesse had instructed him. He arrived at the camp as the army was going out to the battle lines shouting its battle cry.

Now Abner son of Ner, the general in command of Saul’s army, had taken Saul’s son Ish-bosheth and had brought him to Mahanaim.He appointed him king over Gilead, the Geshurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and all Israel.Ish-bosheth son of Saul was forty years old when he began to rule over Israel. He ruled two years. However, the people of Judah followed David.David was king in Hebron over the people of Judah for seven and a half years.Then Abner son of Ner and the servants of Ish-bosheth son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

Ner was the father of Kish, and Kish was the father of Saul. Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. Ish-bosheth said to Abner,“ Why did you have sexual relations with my father’s concubine?”These words of Ish-bosheth really angered Abner and he said,“ Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah? This very day I am demonstrating loyalty to the house of Saul your father and to his relatives and his friends! I have not betrayed you into the hand of David. Yet you have accused me of sinning with this woman today!

When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside at the gate as if to speak privately with him. Joab then stabbed him in the abdomen and killed him, avenging the shed blood of his brother Asahel.

The king chanted the following lament for Abner:“ Should Abner have died like a fool?Your hands were not bound, and your feet were not put into irons. You fell the way one falls before criminals.” All the people wept over him again.Then all the people came and encouraged David to eat food while it was still day. But David took an oath saying,“ God will punish me severely if I taste bread or anything whatsoever before the sun sets!”All the people noticed this and it pleased them. In fact, everything the king did pleased all the people.All the people and all Israel realized on that day that the killing of Abner son of Ner was not done at the king’s instigation.Then the king said to his servants,“ Do you not realize that a great leader has fallen this day in Israel?

There was a Benjaminite man named Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. He was a prominent person.
