掃羅從以色列中為自己挑選了三千人：兩千人跟隨掃羅在米克瑪和伯特利山，一千人跟隨約拿單在便雅憫的基比亞。其餘的人，掃羅就打發他們各回自己的帳篷。

那些尋索我命的設下圈套，那些尋機加害我的口吐威嚇，他們終日思想詭計。

你們要查清他躲藏的所有地方，確定後回來見我，我就與你們一同去。如果他在那地方，我就把他從猶大的千家萬戶中搜出來。」於是西弗人動身，在掃羅之先回西弗去了。那時大衛和他的部下在瑪雲的曠野，荒漠南邊的亞拉巴。掃羅和他的部下去尋索大衛，有人告訴大衛，他就下到巖石帶，留在瑪雲曠野。掃羅聽說了，就去瑪雲曠野追趕大衛。
