I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.

saying,“ Don’t be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. You yourself will be king over Israel, and I’ll be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows it is true.”

Abner conferred with the elders of Israel:“ In the past you wanted David to be king over you.Now take action, because the Lord has spoken concerning David:‘ Through My servant David I will save My people Israel from the power of the Philistines and the power of all Israel’s enemies.’”

When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.“ In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him,“ because this is what was written by the prophet:And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah: because out of you will come a leader who will shepherd My people Israel.”

but now your reign will not endure. The Lord has found a man loyal to Him, and the Lord has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not done what the Lord commanded.”

For he has stretched out his hand against God and has arrogantly opposed the Almighty.

After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying,“ Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him.”

Then Saul became angry with Jonathan and shouted,“ You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you are siding with Jesse’s son to your own shame and to the disgrace of your mother?Every day Jesse’s son lives on earth you and your kingship are not secure. Now send for him and bring him to me— he deserves to die.”

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.
