David was at the cave of Adullam. During harvest time, three of the 30 chief warriors came down to him there. A group of Philistines was camped in the Valley of Rephaim.At that time David was in his usual place of safety. Some Philistine troops were stationed at Bethlehem.

Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the Lord’ s temple. They had cymbals, harps and lyres. They did everything in the way King David, his prophet Gad, and Nathan the prophet had required. The Lord had given commands about all these things through his prophets.

But I said,“ Should a man like me run away? Should someone like me go into the temple just to save his life? No! I won’t go!”

The Lord spoke to Gad, David’s prophet. The Lord said,

When people attack you in one place, escape to another. What I’m about to tell you is true. You will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Some men from the territories of Benjamin and Judah also came to David at his usual place of safety.

“ People of Judah, do not agree with those who say Isaiah is guilty of treason. Do not fear what they fear. Do not be afraid.The Lord rules over all. So you must think about him as holy. You must have respect for him. You must fear him.Then the Lord will be a holy place of safety for you. But that’s not true for many people in Israel and Judah. He will be a stone that causes them to trip. He will be a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare.

The events of King David’s rule from beginning to end are written down. They are written in the records of Samuel, Nathan and Gad, the prophets.

David was told,“ The Philistines are fighting against the town of Keilah. They are stealing grain from the threshing floors.”So he asked the Lord for advice. He said,“ Should I go and attack those Philistines?” The Lord answered him,“ Go and attack them. Save Keilah.”But David’s men said to him,“ We’re afraid here in Judah. Suppose we go to Keilah and fight against the Philistine army. Then we’ll be even more afraid.”Once again David asked the Lord what he should do. The Lord answered him,“ Go down to Keilah. I am going to hand the Philistines over to you.”So David and his men went to Keilah. They fought against the Philistines and carried off their livestock. David wounded and killed large numbers of Philistines. And he saved the people of Keilah.Abiathar, the son of Ahimelek, had brought down the sacred linen apron with him from Nob. He did it when he ran away to David at Keilah.

Before David got up the next morning, a message from the Lord came to Gad the prophet. He was David’s seer. The message said,
