But some evil troublemakers among David’s men said,“ They didn’t go with us, so they can’t have any of the plunder we recovered. He has kept us safe and helped us defeat the band of raiders that attacked us.Who will listen when you talk like this? We share and share alike— those who go to battle and those who guard the equipment.”

“ Get your swords!” was David’s reply as he strapped on his own. Then 400 men started off with David, and 200 remained behind to guard their equipment.

David was now in great danger because all his men were very bitter about losing their sons and daughters, and they began to talk of stoning him. But David found strength in the Lord his God.

He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.He feels pity for the weak and the needy, and he will rescue them.He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious to him.

He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold— along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned— to pay the debt.“ But the man fell down before his master and begged him,‘ Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt.“ But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.“ His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time.‘ Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded.But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.“ When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened.Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said,‘ You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me.Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt.

So David and his men— about 600 of them now— left Keilah and began roaming the countryside. Word soon reached Saul that David had escaped, so he didn’t go to Keilah after all.

“ About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him to be the leader of my people, Israel. He will rescue them from the Philistines, for I have looked down on my people in mercy and have heard their cry.”

But David refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord.“ God forbid that I should drink this!” he exclaimed.“ This water is as precious as the blood of these men who risked their lives to bring it to me.” So David did not drink it. These are examples of the exploits of the Three.

And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it.
