If your father misses me at all, tell him,‘ David earnestly asked my permission to hurry to Bethlehem, his hometown, because an annual sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’

Your father might miss me. If he does, then tell him,‘ David begged me to let him hurry home to Bethlehem. A yearly sacrifice is being offered there for his whole family group.’

If your father misses me at all, then say,‘ David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the clan.’

If your father asks where I am, tell him I asked permission to go home to Bethlehem for an annual family sacrifice.

她們回答說：「有的，看哪，他就在你們前面。快！他今日正來到城裏，因為今日百姓要在丘壇獻祭。

掃羅問他說：「年輕人，你是誰的兒子？」大衛說：「我是你僕人伯利恆人耶西的兒子。」

撒母耳說：「我怎麼能去呢？掃羅一聽見，就會殺我。」耶和華說：「你可以手裏牽一頭小母牛去，說：『我來是要向耶和華獻祭。』你要請耶西來一同獻祭，我會指示你當做的事。我對你說的那個人，你要為我膏他。」撒母耳遵照耶和華的話去做，來到伯利恆，城裏的長老都戰戰兢兢出來迎接他，有人問他說：「你是為平安來的嗎？」他說：「為平安來的，我來是要向耶和華獻祭。你們要使自己分別為聖，來跟我一同獻祭。」撒母耳把耶西和他眾兒子分別為聖，請他們來一同獻祭。

但耶和華－你們的神在你們各支派中選擇何處作為立他名的居所，你們就要到那裏求問，

經上不是說『基督是大衛的後裔，出自大衛的本鄉伯利恆』嗎？」
