The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,

Indeed, I escaped from the battle line today.” And he said,“ How are things, my son?”Then the one who brought the news replied,“ Israel has fled before the Philistines and there has also been a great defeat among the people, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas are also dead; and the ark of God has been taken.”When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell off the seat backward beside the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy. And so he judged Israel for forty years.Now his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was pregnant and about to give birth; and when she heard the news that the ark of God had been taken and that her father in law and her husband had died, she kneeled down and gave birth, because her pains came upon her.And about the time of her death the women who were standing by her said to her,“ Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention.

and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the Lord at Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.

You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of orphans has been crushed.

Then to Abiathar the priest the king said,“ Go to Anathoth to your own field, for you deserve to die; but I will not put you to death at this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and because you were afflicted in everything with which my father was afflicted.”So Solomon dismissed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, to fulfill the word of the Lord, which He had spoken regarding the house of Eli in Shiloh.
