非利士人列陣與以色列人交戰，大敗以色列人，殺了他們四千人。

上帝的約櫃被擄走了，以利的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈被殺身亡。當天有一個便雅憫人逃出了戰場，他撕爛衣服，頭蒙灰塵，來到示羅。以利正坐在路旁的座位上觀望，因為他心裡為上帝的約櫃擔憂。那個從戰場回來的人進城報信後，全城的人都放聲大哭。以利聽見哭喊聲，就問：「人們為何喊叫？」那人趕忙告訴他。那時，以利已經九十八歲，眼睛因為年老而失明。報信的人對以利說：「我今天是從戰場逃回來的。」以利問：「我的孩子，情況怎麼樣？」報信的答道：「以色列人被非利士人擊潰，傷亡慘重，你的兩個兒子何弗尼及非尼哈都死了，上帝的約櫃也被擄走了。」以利年老體胖，聽到約櫃被擄去，就從門邊的座位上向後跌倒，頸斷身亡。他做士師審理以色列人的事務共四十年。以利的兒媳婦、非尼哈的妻子當時懷孕在身，接近產期。她聽說上帝的約櫃被擄、公公和丈夫都死了，就突然陣痛，生下了孩子。在她彌留之際，身旁的婦人對她說：「不要怕，你生了一個男孩。」但她既不理會，也不回答。

其中有穿著以弗得的祭司亞希亞，即亞希突的兒子。亞希突是示羅耶和華祭司以利的孫子，非尼哈的兒子，以迦博的哥哥。沒有人留意到約拿單出去了。

「人子啊，我打斷了埃及王法老的臂膀，沒有人替他敷藥包紮，以致他無力拿刀。主耶和華說，『我要與埃及王法老為敵，我要把他那強壯的臂膀和曾經受傷的臂膀一起打斷，使刀從他手中掉落。我要把埃及人驅散到列國，分散到列邦。我要使巴比倫王的臂膀強壯有力，把我的刀交在他手中。我要打斷法老的臂膀，使法老在他面前像受了致命傷的人一樣呻吟。

因為惡人的勢力終必瓦解，耶和華必扶持義人。

王委派耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅替代約押為元帥，命撒督祭司代替亞比亞他。

你讓寡婦空手而去，你打斷孤兒的臂膀。

「『以色列人走入歧途時，有些利未人也遠離我、追隨偶像，他們必須承擔自己犯罪的後果。

王對亞比亞他祭司說：「你回亞拿突的老家去吧。你本是該死的，但我念你在我父大衛面前抬過主耶和華的約櫃，曾經與我父親患難與共，才饒你一命。」所羅門就罷免了亞比亞他的職位，不許他再做耶和華的祭司。這事應驗了耶和華在示羅所說的有關以利家的預言。
