掃羅登極的時候、年三十歲；既作了王管理以色列有兩年了，

看哪，現在有這一位王在你們面前往來了；我，我年老髮白了；看吧，我的兒子都和你們在一起；我，我自幼年到今日、都在你們面前往來。

然而永恆主並沒有意思要將以色列的名從天下塗抹掉；他才藉着約阿施的兒子耶羅波安的手來拯救他們。

大約過了一個月，亞捫人拿轄上來，紮營圍困基列雅比；雅比人對拿轄說：『你和我們立約，我們就服事你。』亞捫人拿轄對他們說：『只有這條件：你們各人的右眼剜出來，讓我羞辱以色列眾人：我就和你們立約。』雅比的長老對他說：『請寬限我們七天，我們好打發人往以色列全境；若沒有人拯救我們，我們就出來歸順你。』使者到了掃羅住的基比亞，將這些話說給人民聽，眾民就都放聲而哭。掃羅正從田間趕牛回來，就問說：『人民為了甚麼而哭呢？』有人將雅比人的話向他敘說。掃羅聽見這些話，就被上帝的靈大大感動，怒氣大發。將一對牛切成塊子，由使者經手送遍以色列四境，說：『凡不出來跟從掃羅和撒母耳的，也必這樣待他的牛。』於是眾民都起了懼怕永恆主的心，大家就都出來、如同一人。掃羅在比色點閱他們；以色列人有三十萬，猶大人有三萬。他對來的使者說：『你們要這樣對基列雅比人說：「明天太陽正熱的時候、你們必得拯救。」』使者們去告訴雅比人，雅比人都很歡喜。於是雅比人對拿轄說：『明天我們出來歸順你們；你們看怎麼好、就怎麼待我們吧。』第二天掃羅把人民分為三隊，在晨更時候進了亞捫人營中，擊敗他們直到太陽正熱的時候；剩下的人都潰散，沒有剩下二人同在一處的。人民對撒母耳說：『那說「掃羅哪能作王管理我們？」的是誰？將這些人交出來，我們好處死他們。』掃羅說：『今天一個人也不可被處死，因為今天永恆主在以色列中施行了拯救。』

上帝激起了一個敵擋所羅門的人，就是以利亞大的兒子利遜；曾經從他主上瑣巴王哈大底謝那裏逃走而來的。
