亞捫人納哈什上來，對著基列-雅比紮營。全體雅比人就對納哈什說：「求你與我們立約，我們就服事你。」但亞捫人納哈什對他們說：「我會以這條件與你們立約：剜出你們每個人的右眼，使全以色列蒙受恥辱。」雅比的長老們回應他：「請寬限我們七天，讓我們派遣使者到以色列全境，如果沒有人拯救我們，我們就出來歸順你。」使者們來到掃羅的基比亞，把這事說給民眾聽，全體民眾就放聲大哭。看哪，掃羅正從田野趕著牛回來。掃羅問：「民眾怎麼了？他們竟然都在哭！」他們就把雅比人的話講述給掃羅。掃羅聽了這些話，神的靈就臨到他，他就大發烈怒。他牽來一對牛，把牠們切成塊，藉著使者們的手送到以色列全境，說：「凡是不出來跟隨掃羅和撒母耳的，他的牛也必被這樣對待！」於是民眾都懼怕耶和華，他們就出來，如同一人。掃羅在貝澤克數點他們，有以色列人三十萬，猶大人三萬。他們對那些前來的使者說：「你們要對基列-雅比人如此說：『明天太陽最熱的時候，你們必得拯救。』」使者們就回去，告訴了雅比人，他們就歡喜。於是雅比人回覆亞捫人：「明天我們出來歸順你們，你們看怎樣好，就怎樣對待我們吧。」第二天，掃羅把民眾分成三隊，在晨更的時候進入亞捫人的營地，擊殺他們，直到白天最熱的時候；殘留的人都四散，甚至他們中間沒有兩人留在一起。民眾對撒母耳說：「那些說『掃羅怎麼能統治我們』的人是誰呢？把那些人交出來，我們要把他們殺掉。」但掃羅說：「今天不可殺人，因為今天耶和華在以色列施行了拯救。」
