亚扪人纳哈什上来，对着基列-雅比扎营。全体雅比人就对纳哈什说：“求你与我们立约，我们就服事你。”但亚扪人纳哈什对他们说：“我会以这条件与你们立约：剜出你们每个人的右眼，使全以色列蒙受耻辱。”雅比的长老们回应他：“请宽限我们七天，让我们派遣使者到以色列全境，如果没有人拯救我们，我们就出来归顺你。”使者们来到扫罗的基比亚，把这事说给民众听，全体民众就放声大哭。看哪，扫罗正从田野赶着牛回来。扫罗问：“民众怎么了？他们竟然都在哭！”他们就把雅比人的话讲述给扫罗。扫罗听了这些话，神的灵就临到他，他就大发烈怒。他牵来一对牛，把它们切成块，藉着使者们的手送到以色列全境，说：“凡是不出来跟随扫罗和撒母耳的，他的牛也必被这样对待！”于是民众都惧怕耶和华，他们就出来，如同一人。扫罗在贝泽克数点他们，有以色列人三十万，犹大人三万。他们对那些前来的使者说：“你们要对基列-雅比人如此说：‘明天太阳最热的时候，你们必得拯救。’”使者们就回去，告诉了雅比人，他们就欢喜。于是雅比人回复亚扪人：“明天我们出来归顺你们，你们看怎样好，就怎样对待我们吧。”第二天，扫罗把民众分成三队，在晨更的时候进入亚扪人的营地，击杀他们，直到白天最热的时候；残留的人都四散，甚至他们中间没有两人留在一起。民众对撒母耳说：“那些说‘扫罗怎么能统治我们’的人是谁呢？把那些人交出来，我们要把他们杀掉。”但扫罗说：“今天不可杀人，因为今天耶和华在以色列施行了拯救。”
