Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.

And Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country.And the people of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.And the people of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,Nebo, and Baal-meon( their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built.And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it.And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

“ The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. And you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say,‘ Is there any man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own.’

I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you.

They shall go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west;they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria, and I will return them to their homes, declares the Lord.

Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,‘ Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained.

Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans.Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of Rabbah,and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan.This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans.Their region extended from Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities,and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

And as for those of you who are left, I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall when none pursues.They shall stumble over one another, as if to escape a sword, though none pursues. And you shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock.So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation,“ Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,the land that the Lord struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”And they said,“ If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”

“ When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities.
