他废了扫罗之后，就兴起大卫作他们的王，又为他作见证说：‘我寻得耶西的儿子大卫，他是合我心意的人，他要遵行我一切的旨意。’

撒母耳对他说：“今日耶和华使以色列国与你断绝，把这国赐给另一个比你更好的人。

当时，你在异象中吩咐你的圣民，说：“我已把救助之力加在壮士身上，高举了那从百姓中所拣选的人。我寻得我的仆人大卫，用我的圣膏膏他。我的手必使他坚立，我的膀臂也必坚固他。仇敌必不勒索他，凶恶之子也不苦害他。我要在他面前打碎他的敌人，击杀那些恨他的人。我的信实和我的慈爱要与他同在；因我的名，他的角必被高举。我要使他的手伸到海上，右手伸到河上。他要称呼我说：‘你是我的父，是我的神，是拯救我的磐石。’我也要立他为长子，为世上最高的君王。我要为他存留我的慈爱，直到永远，我与他所立的约必坚定不移。我也要使他的后裔存到永远，使他的宝座如天之久。“倘若他的子孙离弃我的律法，不照我的典章行，背弃我的律例，不遵守我的诫命，我就要用杖责罚他们的过犯，用鞭责罚他们的罪孽。只是我不将我的慈爱全然收回，也不叫我的信实废除。我必不毁损我的约，也不改变我口中所出的话。我仅此一次指着自己的神圣起誓，我绝不向大卫说谎！他的后裔要存到永远，他的宝座在我面前如太阳，又如月亮永远坚立；天上的见证是确实的。”（细拉）

因此，耶和华—以色列的神说：‘我确实说过，你和你祖宗的家必永远行在我面前，但现在耶和华却说，我绝不会这样做。因为尊重我的，我必尊重他；藐视我的，他必被轻视。

“你回去告诉我百姓的君王希西家说：耶和华—你祖先大卫的神如此说：‘我听见了你的祷告，看见了你的眼泪。看哪，我必医治你；到第三日，你必上到耶和华的殿。

耶西就派人去叫他来。他面色红润，双目清秀，容貌俊美。耶和华说：“起来，膏他，因为这就是他了。”

“明日这时候，我必使一个人从便雅悯地到你这里来，你要膏他作我百姓以色列的君王。他必救我的百姓脱离非利士人的手，因为我眷顾我的百姓，他们的哀声已上达于我。”

但我的慈爱仍不离开他，像离开在你面前所废的扫罗一样。你的家和你的国必在你面前永远坚立，你的王位也必坚定，直到永远。’”

原来那为万物所属、为万物所本的，为要领许多儿子进入荣耀，使救他们的元帅因受苦难而得以完全，本是合宜的。

大卫在神面前蒙恩，祈求为雅各的家预备居所。

从前扫罗作我们王的时候，率领以色列人出入的是你。耶和华也曾对你说：‘你必牧养我的百姓以色列，你必作以色列的君王。’”
