後來神廢除了掃羅，興起大衛做他們的王，並且為他見證說：『我找到了耶西的兒子大衛，一個合乎我心意的人，他將遵行我的一切旨意。』

撒母耳就對他說：「耶和華今天從你身上撕去了以色列的王權，賜給了你的鄰人，他比你好。

那時你在異象中對你的忠信者宣告，說：「我幫助了一位勇士，高舉了那從民中所揀選的。我找到我的僕人大衛，用我聖潔的膏油膏抹了他。我的手必堅定地與他同在，我的膀臂也必使他穩固。仇敵不能毀滅他，不義之子也不能苦待他。我要在他面前打碎他的敵人，我要擊打那些恨他的人。我的信實和我的慈愛要與他同在；奉我的名，他的角必被高舉。我要把他的左手放到海洋上，把他的右手放到河流中。他將呼求我：『你是我的父、我的神，是我救恩的磐石。』我還要立他作長子，作地上君王中的至高者。我要向他持守我的慈愛，直到永遠；我與他所立的約也必堅定。我要堅立他的後裔，直到永遠；使他的寶座如天之久。如果他的子孫離棄我的律法，不照著我的法規而行；如果他們褻瀆我的律例，不遵守我的誡命；我就要用杖懲罰他們的過犯，用鞭懲罰他們的罪孽。然而，我不會從他身上收回我的慈愛，也不會背棄我的信實。我不會違背我的約，也不會改變我口中所出的話。我曾指著我的聖潔起過一次誓，我絕不對大衛說謊。他的後裔將長存，直到永遠；他的寶座在我面前如同太陽，又如月亮永遠確立，像是天上確實的見證。」細拉

「因此耶和華以色列的神宣告：我確實說過，你和你的父家要永遠行在我面前。但現在，耶和華宣告：絕不會這樣了！因為尊重我的，我必尊重他；輕視我的，他必被藐視。

耶西就派人去把他帶來；他面色紅潤，雙目清秀，樣貌英俊。耶和華說：「起來膏抹他，就是這個人！」

「明天大約這個時候，我會從便雅憫地派遣一個人到你這裡，你要膏立他作我子民以色列的領袖。他將拯救我的子民脫離非利士人的手，因為我眷顧我的子民，他們的哀聲已經達到我這裡。」

我的慈愛卻不會離開他，像離開在你面前所廢除的掃羅那樣。你的家和你的國必在我面前永遠堅固，你的王位必永遠堅立。』」

萬有因他而有、萬有藉他而成的那一位，既然要帶領許多兒女歸於榮耀，就藉著苦難使他們救恩的元首得以成全，這是合宜的，

大衛在神面前蒙了恩典，就祈求為雅各的神預備一個居所。

從前掃羅作我們王的時候，帶領以色列出入的就是你，耶和華也曾對你說：『你要牧養我的子民以色列，你要作以色列的領袖。』」

耶和華對撒母耳說：「你為掃羅悲慟要到什麼時候呢？我已經厭棄他作以色列的王。你把犄角裝滿膏油，去吧，我要派遣你到伯利恆人耶西那裡，因為我在他的兒子中選定了一個王。」
