之後，上帝廢掉掃羅，選立大衛作王，並為他作證說，『我找到了耶西的兒子大衛，他是合我心意的人，他必遵行我一切的旨意。』

撒母耳對他說：「耶和華今天已經從你身上拿走了以色列國的王位，賜給了一個比你好的人。

你曾在異象中對你忠心的子民說：「我已把力量賜給一位勇士，已擢升我在民中揀選的人。我找到了我的僕人大衛，用我的聖油膏立他。我的手必扶持他，我的臂膀必加給他力量。仇敵勝不過他，惡人不能欺壓他。我要當著他的面擊垮他的敵人，打倒恨他的人。我要以信實和慈愛待他，他必因我的名而充滿力量。我要使他左手掌管大海，右手統治江河。他要向我高呼，『你是我的父親，我的上帝，拯救我的磐石。』我要立他為我的長子，使他做天下至尊的君王。我要永遠用慈愛待他，我與他立的約永不更改。我要使他的後裔永無窮盡，讓他的王位與天同存。如果他的後代背棄我的律法，不遵行我的典章，觸犯我的律例，不守我的誡命，我就會因他們的罪用杖懲罰他們，用鞭子責打他們。但我不會收回我的慈愛，也不會背棄我的信實。我必不毀約，也不食言。因我曾憑自己的聖潔向大衛起誓，我絕無謊言。他的後裔必永無窮盡，他的王位必在我面前如日長存，又如天上亙古不變的月亮，永遠堅立。」（細拉）

「回去告訴我子民的首領希西迦，『你祖先大衛的上帝耶和華說，我已聽見你的禱告，看見了你的眼淚。我要醫治你，三天後你就可以上耶和華的殿。

耶西就派人去叫他回來。他面色紅潤，眉清目秀，相貌英俊。耶和華說：「就是他，起來膏立他吧。」

「明天這個時候，我會從便雅憫境內差遣一個人到你這裡，你要膏立他做我以色列子民的首領，他會從非利士人手中把我的子民拯救出來，因為我已聽到我子民的呼求，我要施恩給他們。」

但我的慈愛卻不會像離開從你面前被廢的掃羅那樣離開他。你的家和你的國必在我面前永遠堅立，你的王位必永遠穩固。』」

作為萬物的歸宿和根源的上帝，叫救恩的元帥耶穌經歷苦難而得以純全，以便帶領許多的兒女進入榮耀，這樣的安排是恰當的。
