He will be your mouthpiece, and you will stand in the place of God for him, telling him what to say.

Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God.God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

And he said,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, has declared: I brought you from Egypt and rescued you from the Egyptians and from all of the nations that were oppressing you.

Our ancestors went down to Egypt, and we lived there a long time, and we and our ancestors were brutally mistreated by the Egyptians.

“ Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.

So Jacob went to Egypt. He died there, as did our ancestors.

“ It was the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron,” Samuel continued.“ He brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt.

That is how the Lord rescued Israel from the hand of the Egyptians that day. And the Israelites saw the bodies of the Egyptians washed up on the seashore.When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

On that very day the Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army.

He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this land of hills he had won for them.He drove out the nations before them; he gave them their inheritance by lot. He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.

So Jacob left Beersheba, and his sons took him to Egypt. They carried him and their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had provided for them.They also took all their livestock and all the personal belongings they had acquired in the land of Canaan. So Jacob and his entire family went to Egypt—sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters— all his descendants.

Today you will know that the living God is among you. He will surely drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites ahead of you.Look, the Ark of the Covenant, which belongs to the Lord of the whole earth, will lead you across the Jordan River!Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.The priests will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall.”

Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them.Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.”

O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago:You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free.They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them.

The Aaron and Moses named in this list are the same ones to whom the Lord said,“ Lead the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army.”

Now the Lord had said to Aaron,“ Go out into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So Aaron went and met Moses at the mountain of God, and he embraced him.Moses then told Aaron everything the Lord had commanded him to say. And he told him about the miraculous signs the Lord had commanded him to perform.Then Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt and called all the elders of Israel together.Aaron told them everything the Lord had told Moses, and Moses performed the miraculous signs as they watched.Then the people of Israel were convinced that the Lord had sent Moses and Aaron. When they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.

He gave his people the lands of pagan nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted.

“ Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.I promise you what I promised Moses:‘ Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you—from the Negev wilderness in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the land of the Hittites.’
