And he said,“ This will be the practice of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and put them in his chariots for himself and among his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots.He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to do his plowing and to gather in his harvest, and to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.He will also take your daughters and use them as perfumers, cooks, and bakers.He will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants.And he will take a tenth of your seed and your vineyards and give it to his high officials and his servants.He will also take your male servants and your female servants, and your best young men, and your donkeys, and use them for his work.He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his servants.Then you will cry out on that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you on that day.”

“ When you enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you take possession of it and live in it, and you say,‘ I will appoint a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’you shall in fact appoint a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses. One from among your countrymen you shall appoint as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves, anyone who is not your countryman.In any case, he is not to acquire many horses for himself, nor shall he make the people return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you,‘ You shall never again return that way.’And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.“ Now it shall come about, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this Law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, so that he will learn to fear the Lord his God, by carefully following all the words of this Law and these statutes,so that his heart will not be haughty toward his countrymen, and that he will not turn away from the commandment to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may live long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.

Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed,

‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ If the prince gives a gift from his inheritance to any of his sons, it shall belong to his sons; it is their possession by inheritance.But if he gives a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his until the year of release; then it shall return to the prince. His inheritance shall be only his sons’; it shall belong to them.And the prince shall not take from the people’s inheritance, depriving them of their property; he shall give his sons inheritance from his own property, so that My people will not be scattered, anyone from his property.” ’ ”

Every person is to be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;for it is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for the sake of conscience.For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.Pay to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor.

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.

for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Enough, you princes of Israel; get rid of violence and destruction, and practice justice and righteousness. Revoke your evictions of My people,” declares the Lord God.“ You shall have accurate balances, an accurate ephah, and an accurate bath.
