But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said,‘ No, appoint a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”

你们今天却离弃了那位拯救你们脱离一切灾难和困苦的神，竟对他说：‘求你立一个王统治我们。’现在你们要按着你们的支派和家族，站在耶和华面前。”

今天你们却厌弃你们的神，就是使你们脱离一切灾祸和患难的拯救者；你们对他说：‘求你立一个王统治我们。’现在，你们要按着自己的支派和宗族，站在耶和华面前。”

爾之上帝、救爾出諸患難艱苦者、爾遺棄之、求立一王、今日爾當至此、循爾支派億兆、立於耶和華前。

爾之天主、救爾於諸患難艱苦者、爾曹竟棄之、曰、求爾立一王治理我、今當至此、循爾支派宗族、立於主前、

But now you have turned your backs on your God. He saves you out of all your trouble and suffering. In spite of that, you have said,‘ We refuse to listen. Place a king over us.’ So now gather together to meet with the Lord. Do it tribe by tribe and family group by family group.”

But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him,‘ Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”

But though I have rescued you from your misery and distress, you have rejected your God today and have said,‘ No, we want a king instead!’ Now, therefore, present yourselves before the Lord by tribes and clans.”

But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and afflictions. You said to him,‘ You must set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”

But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your catastrophes and your distresses; yet you have said,‘ No, but put a king over us!’ Now then, present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your groups of thousands.”

“ But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me,‘ No, we want a king to rule over us’— even though the Lord your God was your king.

Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.

But the people refused to listen to Samuel.“ No!” they said.“ We want a king over us.

“‘ In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man.Whoever is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen.The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen.Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was chosen.Then Joshua said to Achan,“ My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”Achan replied,“ It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done:When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath.They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord.Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.Joshua said,“ Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

But when they said,“ Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.And the Lord told him:“ Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

“ But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call on the Lord to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”Then Samuel called on the Lord, and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the Lord and of Samuel.The people all said to Samuel,“ Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”

“ Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff.
