They were children of the people who had lived in the land before the Israelites came. Those people had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. But the Israelites hadn’t been able to kill all of them. Solomon forced them to work very hard as his slaves. And they still work for Israel as slaves to this day.

Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and said,“ Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me,I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.”The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.These are the nations the Lord left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan( he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience):the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon to Lebo Hamath.They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

The people of Joseph replied,“ The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron, both those in Beth Shan and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph— to Ephraim and Manasseh—“ You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotmentbut the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”

They did not destroy the peoples as the Lord had commanded them,but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.

Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted to build the Lord’s temple, his own palace, the terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer.

But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor.
