他們來到耶路撒冷上帝之殿的地址第二年、第二月、撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯、約薩達的兒子耶書亞、和他們其餘的族弟兄、就是祭司和利未人、跟一切從被擄中回到耶路撒冷的人、就開了工；又派立了利未人、從二十歲和以上的、來監管永恆主之殿的工程。於是耶書亞的子孫和族弟兄、甲篾和他的子孫、猶大的子孫、都站起來，一同負責監管在上帝殿裏作工的人：利未人希拿達的子孫和族弟兄、也都這樣作。建築的人立永恆主殿堂根基的時候、祭司穿着禮服、拿着號筒，亞薩的子孫利未人拿着響鈸，都站着，讚美永恆主，照以色列王大衛所手定的。他們彼此唱和、讚美稱謝永恆主、說：『因為他至善；他向以色列人所施的堅愛永遠長存。』他們讚美永恆主的時候、眾民都大聲歡呼、慶祝永恆主之殿的根基已經立定。但是有許多祭司中的人和利未人、以及父系的族長、那些曾經見過先前的殿之奠基的、老年人、如今看見這樣的殿在眼前，便大聲哭號；不過也有許多人提高了聲音、歡喜快樂地呼喊；以致眾民竟不能分辨歡樂呼喊的聲音、和哭號的聲音，因為眾民都大聲呼喊，聲音聽到遠處。

他自己的宮室呢、所羅門費了十三年的工夫去建造，才把他全部的宮室都造完了。

由於神言人哈該和易多的孫子撒迦利亞之傳神言、猶大人的長老就建造，而且很成功。憑着以色列之上帝的諭旨、也憑着波斯王古列、大利烏、亞達薛西的諭旨、他們一直地建造，並且造完。到亞達月三日這殿就造出來：那是在大利烏王執掌國政的第六年。

於是猶太人說：『這殿堂乃四十六年才建造成的，你三天以內就要使它復起？』

是所羅巴伯要建成永恆主的殿堂；是約書亞要擔當祭司的尊榮，是所羅巴伯要坐在寶座上執政；是約書亞也要在寶座上；他們二人之間必有和諧合作的計畫。』」這冠冕要在永恆主的殿堂裏給黑玳、多比雅、耶大雅、和西番雅的兒子約希亞、做個表樣象徵。『散於遠方的人也要來，參加建成永恆主殿堂的工程；你們就知道是萬軍之永恆主差遣了我到你們這裏來的。你們若注意聽從永恆主你們的上帝的聲音，這事就必成就。』

以色列人出埃及地以後四百八十年，所羅門作王管理以色列、第四年西弗月、就是二月、他開始為永恆主建殿。
