耶和華對基甸說：「我要用這舔水的三百人拯救你們，把米甸交在你手中；其餘的百姓都可以各回自己的地方去。」百姓手裏拿着食物和角；其餘的以色列人，基甸都打發他們各自回到自己的帳棚，只留下這三百人。米甸營在他下邊的平原上。

亞蘭王吩咐他的三十二個戰車長說：「你們不要與他們的大將或小兵交戰，只要單單攻擊以色列王。」

那時以色列人離開那裏，各自回到自己的支派、宗族；他們從那裏起行，各自回到自己的地業去了。

於是王起來，坐在城門口。有人告訴眾軍兵說：「看哪，王坐在城門口。」眾軍兵就都到王的面前。那時，以色列人已經逃跑，各回自己的帳棚去了。

非利士人進攻，以色列人敗了，各往自己的家逃跑。被殺的人很多，以色列倒下的步兵有三萬。

『耶和華如此說：你們不可上去與你們的弟兄以色列人打仗。你們各自回家去吧！因為這事是出於我。』」眾人就聽從耶和華的話，遵照耶和華的話回去了。

以色列眾人見王不依從他們，百姓就回話給王，說：「我們在大衛中有甚麼份呢？我們在耶西的兒子中沒有產業！以色列啊，回你的帳棚去吧！大衛啊，現在你顧自己的家吧！」於是，以色列人都回自己的帳棚去了；

米該雅說：「我看見以色列眾人散佈在山上，如同沒有牧人的羊羣一般。耶和華說：『這些人沒有主人，他們可以平安地各自回家去。』」
