先是亞蘭王吩咐他的三十二個戰車長說：『無論小將大將你們都不要跟他交戰，只要跟以色列王交戰。』

然後以色列人就離開那裏，各歸本族派、本家族；他們從那裏出來，各歸本地業去。

於是王起來，去坐在城門口。有人告訴眾民說：『看哪，王坐在城門口呢。』眾民就都到王面前來。先是以色列人都已逃跑，各回各家而去。

非利士人一打起仗來，以色列人就被擊敗，各向自己的帳棚逃跑；那一場擊殺大極了；以色列人中倒斃了三萬步兵。

「永恆主這麼說：你們不可上去，不可同你們的族弟兄以色列人交戰。你們各歸各家去吧；因為這事原是出於我。」』眾民就聽從永恆主的話，照永恆主所說的回家去。

以色列眾民見王不聽他們的要求，就回答王說：『我們在大衛上有甚麼分兒呢？我們在耶西的兒子上並沒有業分呀。以色列人哪，回家去吧！大衛啊，現在只顧自己的家吧。』於是以色列人都回家去。

米該雅說：『我看見以色列眾人四散在山上、如同沒有牧人的羊羣一般；永恆主說：「這些人既沒有主人，讓他們安安然然各回各家去吧。」』
