猶大人敗在以色列人面前，各自逃回家裏去了。

耶和華對基甸說：「我要用這舔水的三百人拯救你們，將米甸人交在你手中；其餘的人都可以各歸各處去。」這三百人就帶着食物和角；其餘的以色列人，基甸都打發他們各歸各的帳棚，只留下這三百人。米甸營在他下邊的平原裏。

先是亞蘭王吩咐他的三十二個車兵長說：「他們的兵將，無論大小，你們都不可與他們爭戰，只要與以色列王爭戰。」

當時以色列人離開那裏，各歸本支派、本宗族、本地業去了。

於是王起來，坐在城門口。眾民聽說王坐在城門口，就都到王面前。以色列人已經逃跑，各回各家去了。

非利士人和以色列人打仗，以色列人敗了，各向各家奔逃，被殺的人甚多，以色列的步兵仆倒了三萬。

『耶和華如此說：你們不可上去與你們的弟兄以色列人爭戰。各歸各家去吧！因為這事出於我。』」眾人就聽從耶和華的話，遵着耶和華的命回去了。

以色列眾民見王不依從他們，就對王說：我們與大衛有甚麼分兒呢？與耶西的兒子並沒有關涉。以色列人哪，各回各家去吧！大衛家啊，自己顧自己吧！於是，以色列人都回自己家裏去了，

米該雅說：「我看見以色列眾民散在山上，如同沒有牧人的羊羣一般。耶和華說：『這民沒有主人，他們可以平平安安地各歸各家去。』」
