在困苦流離中，耶路撒冷想起昔日的榮華。如今，她的人民落在敵人手中，無人援救。仇敵看見她，都嘲笑她的滅亡。

不要聽希西迦的話。亞述王說，『你們要跟我講和，出來歸順我，你們就可以吃自己葡萄樹和無花果樹的果子，喝自己井裡的水。以後我會來領你們到一個地方，那裡和這裡一樣有五穀和新酒、餅和葡萄園。你們就可以存活，不至於死。希西迦說耶和華會拯救你們，不要聽信他的話。

你們這群牧人啊，要悲哀哭泣！你們這群百姓的首領啊，要在灰塵中傷心地打滾！因為你們被宰殺、驅散的時候到了，你們將像精美的器皿一樣被摔得粉碎。

大衛說：「我實在為難！不過我寧願落在耶和華的手中，也不願落在人的手中，因為耶和華有無限的憐憫。」
