非利士人聚集了來、要同以色列人交戰；有車三千輛，駿馬六千，步兵像海邊的沙那麼多；他們上來，在伯亞文東邊、密抹紮營。以色列人見自己危急（因為以色列民真地窘迫），就藏在山洞、叢林、碞穴、地窘、或坑井中，或是渡過約但河渡口，到了迦得和基列地。那時掃羅還在吉甲；眾民都震顫發抖、跟從着他。掃羅照撒母耳所定的日期等了七天；撒母耳還沒有來到吉甲，人民都漸漸離開掃羅散去了。

我又看：在日光之下、賽跑未必給輕快的先跑到，戰爭未必給勇士得勝利，糧食也未必給智慧人得着，財富未必給明達人賺得到，恩寵也未必給有知識的人博得着：他們所碰到的就只是定時與機會。

『你們要剛強壯膽，不要因亞述王和跟隨他的許多蜂擁軍兵而懼怕驚慌；因為和我們同在的比和他們同在的大。和他同在的、是血肉之手臂；而和我們同在的、乃是永恆主我們的上帝，在幫助我們，打我們的仗。』眾民因猶大王希西家的話就覺得有恃無懼了。

掃羅在迦巴的儘邊，坐在米磯崙的石榴樹下，跟從他的約有六百人。

於是這三百眾民、手中拿着乾糧跟號角；其餘的以色列人、基甸都打發各回各家去，只留下那三百人。當時米甸營就在他下邊山谷中。

若不是他們的磐石把他們交付出來，若不是永恆主把他們送交給我們，我們一人怎能追趕他們千人呢？我們兩個人怎能使他們萬人逃跑呢？

『你們要走遍營中，吩咐人民說：「要豫備乾糧，因為三天以內、你們要過這約但河，進去取得永恆主你們的上帝所賜給你們取為產業的地。」』
