那时扫罗在基比亚的边界，坐在米矶仑的石榴树下，跟随他的约有六百人。

耶和华对基甸说：“我要用这舔水的三百人拯救你们，把米甸人交在你们的手里，所有其他的人都可以各回自己的地方去。”

所以耶和华的怒气向他的子民发作；他厌恶自己的产业，把他们交在外族人的手里，恨恶他们的人就管辖他们。他们的仇敌压迫他们，他们就屈服在仇敌的手下。神曾多次搭救他们，他们却故意悖逆，以致因自己的罪孽降为卑微。

亚撒呼求耶和华他的神说：“耶和华啊，强弱悬殊，除你以外没有别的帮助。耶和华我们的神啊，求你帮助我们。因为我们倚靠你，奉你的名去对抗这大军。耶和华啊，你是我们的神，不要让人胜过你。”

约拿单对替他拿武器的仆人说：“来！我们过到这些未受割礼的人的驻军那里去，也许耶和华会为我们动工，因为不论人多或人少，都不能妨碍耶和华施行拯救。”
