As the time of King David’s death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon:

When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.

The time came near for David to die. So he gave orders to his son Solomon.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ The time has come for you to die. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the Tabernacle, so that I may commission him there.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tabernacle.

Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.

And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate,

And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live.For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.

This is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, gave to the people of Israel before his death:

“ So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock— his church, purchased with his own blood— over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you— my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.

Then the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun with these words:“ Be strong and courageous, for you must bring the people of Israel into the land I swore to give them. I will be with you.”

I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom:

As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near.

Instead, commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead the people across the Jordan. He will give them all the land you now see before you as their possession.’

Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord’s battles.
