孩子長大，一日出去到他父親和收割的人那裏。他對父親說：「我的頭啊，我的頭啊！」他父親對僕人說：「把他抱到他母親那裏。」僕人抱去，交給他母親。孩子坐在母親的膝上，到中午就死了。

親愛的，有火一般的考驗臨到你們，不要奇怪，似乎是遭遇非常的事；

我的弟兄們，你們遭受各種試煉時，都要認為是大喜樂，因為知道你們的信心經過考驗，就生忍耐。但要讓忍耐發揮完全的功用，使你們能又完全又完整，一無所缺。

你轉臉，牠們就驚惶；你收回牠們的氣，牠們就死亡，歸於塵土。

他若專心為己，將靈和氣收歸自己，

竟向天上的主自高，差人將他殿中的器皿拿到你面前，你和大臣、王后、妃嬪用這器皿飲酒。你又讚美那不能看、不能聽、無知無識，用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石造的神明，沒有將榮耀歸與那手中掌管你氣息，管理你一切行動的上帝。

「我要將那施恩與懇求的靈，澆灌大衛家和耶路撒冷的居民。他們必仰望我，就是他們所扎的那位。他們必為他悲傷，如喪獨子，又為他哀哭，如喪長子。

這些事以後，上帝考驗亞伯拉罕，對他說：「亞伯拉罕！」他說：「我在這裏。」上帝說：「你要帶你的兒子，就是你所愛的獨子以撒，往摩利亞地去，在我指示你的一座山上，把他獻為燔祭。」

使你們的信心既被考驗，就比那被火試煉仍然能壞的金子更顯寶貴，可以在耶穌基督顯現的時候得着稱讚、榮耀、尊貴。

姊妹兩個就打發人去見耶穌，說：「主啊，你所愛的人病了。」耶穌聽見後卻說：「這病不至於死，而是為了上帝的榮耀，為要使上帝的兒子藉此得榮耀。」

於是耶穌就明白地告訴他們：「拉撒路死了。

凡動物的生命和人類的氣息都在他手中。

忍受試煉的人有福了，因為他經過考驗以後必得生命的冠冕，這是主應許給愛他之人的。

所以，就如身體沒有靈魂是死的，信心沒有行為也是死的。
