He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley.

He even removed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother. That’s because she had made a pole used to worship the female god named Asherah. The Lord hated it. So Asa cut it down. He burned it in the Kidron Valley.

He took the calf they had made and burned it. Then he ground it into powder, threw it into the water, and forced the people to drink it.

The king removed the Asherah pole from the Lord’s Temple and took it outside Jerusalem to the Kidron Valley, where he burned it. Then he ground the ashes of the pole to dust and threw the dust over the graves of the people.

As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.Someone told Jesus,“ Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.”Jesus asked,“ Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”Then he pointed to his disciples and said,“ Look, these are my mother and brothers.Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”

I will destroy your pagan shrines and knock down your places of worship. I will leave your lifeless corpses piled on top of your lifeless idols, and I will despise you.

Then the Israelites burned the town and everything in it. Only the things made from silver, gold, bronze, or iron were kept for the treasury of the Lord’s house.

But we refused to give in to them for a single moment. We wanted to preserve the truth of the gospel message for you.And the leaders of the church had nothing to add to what I was preaching.( By the way, their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me, for God has no favorites.)

“ Suppose someone secretly entices you— even your brother, your son or daughter, your beloved wife, or your closest friend— and says,‘ Let us go worship other gods’— gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known.They might suggest that you worship the gods of peoples who live nearby or who come from the ends of the earth.But do not give in or listen. Have no pity, and do not spare or protect them.You must put them to death! Strike the first blow yourself, and then all the people must join in.Stone the guilty ones to death because they have tried to draw you away from the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery.Then all Israel will hear about it and be afraid, and no one will act so wickedly again.

I took your sin— the calf you had made— and I melted it down in the fire and ground it into fine dust. Then I threw the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain.

After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.

All in Judah were happy about this covenant, for they had entered into it with all their heart. They earnestly sought after God, and they found him. The Levites obeyed your word and guarded your covenant. They were more loyal to you than to their own parents. They ignored their relatives and did not acknowledge their own children.

He reigned in Jerusalem forty one years. His grandmother was Maacah, the granddaughter of Absalom.

“ If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.

Josiah tore down the altars that the kings of Judah had built on the palace roof above the upper room of Ahaz. The king destroyed the altars that Manasseh had built in the two courtyards of the Lord’s Temple. He smashed them to bits and scattered the pieces in the Kidron Valley.The king also desecrated the pagan shrines east of Jerusalem, to the south of the Mount of Corruption, where King Solomon of Israel had built shrines for Ashtoreth, the detestable goddess of the Sidonians; and for Chemosh, the detestable god of the Moabites; and for Molech, the vile god of the Ammonites.He smashed the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah poles. Then he desecrated these places by scattering human bones over them.The king also tore down the altar at Bethel— the pagan shrine that Jeroboam son of Nebat had made when he caused Israel to sin. He burned down the shrine and ground it to dust, and he burned the Asherah pole.

So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!

Everyone cried loudly as the king and his followers passed by. They crossed the Kidron Valley and then went out toward the wilderness.

He removed the pagan shrines, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had been offering sacrifices to it. The bronze serpent was called Nehushtan.

When I saw that they were not following the truth of the gospel message, I said to Peter in front of all the others,“ Since you, a Jew by birth, have discarded the Jewish laws and are living like a Gentile, why are you now trying to make these Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions?

This is what you must do. You must break down their pagan altars and shatter their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols.

He reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother was Maacah, the granddaughter of Absalom.

If anyone continues to prophesy, his own father and mother will tell him,‘ You must die, for you have prophesied lies in the name of the Lord.’ And as he prophesies, his own father and mother will stab him.

He ordered that the altars of Baal be demolished and that the incense altars which stood above them be broken down. He also made sure that the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images were smashed and scattered over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
