有一次，耶羅波安出了耶路撒冷，在路上遇見身披新衣的示羅人亞希雅先知。當時野外只有他們二人。

一天晚上，老眼昏花的以利正睡在自己的房裡。

那時，以利已經九十八歲，眼睛因為年老而失明。

征服了這些地方以後，以色列全體會眾都聚集在示羅，把會幕設立在那裡。

以撒年老的時候，眼睛昏花，幾乎看不見。他把大兒子以掃叫來，說：「我兒啊！」以掃說：「我在這裡。」

以色列因為年老眼睛已經昏花。約瑟把兒子帶到他面前，他就親吻他們、擁抱他們。

守衛家園的手腳顫抖，強壯的身軀變得彎腰駝背；牙齒稀少，無法咀嚼；視力衰退，看不清楚；

我們一生七十歲，強壯的可活八十歲，但人生最美好的時光也充滿勞苦和愁煩，生命轉瞬即逝，我們便如飛而去。

耶羅波安就吩咐妻子：「你喬裝改扮使人認不出你是我妻子，然後去示羅找那位預言我做王的先知亞希雅。

摩西去世時一百二十歲，眼睛沒有昏花，精力沒有衰敗。

軍隊回營後，以色列的長老說：「為什麼今天耶和華使我們敗在非利士人手下？我們從示羅把耶和華的約櫃抬來吧，讓它與我們同去，好從仇敵手中救我們。」於是，他們派人去示羅把那坐在基路伯天使上的萬軍之耶和華的約櫃抬來。以利的兩個兒子何弗尼和非尼哈也隨上帝的約櫃同來。

「『你們去我曾選為我名所在之地的示羅，看看我是怎樣因我以色列子民的罪而懲罰那地方的。我對你們的所作所為一再提出警告，你們卻充耳不聞；我呼喚你們，你們卻不回應。這是耶和華說的。因此，我要像對付示羅一樣對付你們所倚靠的這用來敬拜我的殿，對付我賜給你們和你們祖先的土地。
