And the young men who had grown up with him said to him,“ Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you,‘ Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them,‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs.And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.

And let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, for it is vast, all women will give honor to their husbands, high and low alike.”This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did as Memucan proposed.

Then the king’s young men who attended him said,“ Let beautiful young virgins be sought out for the king.And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom to gather all the beautiful young virgins to the harem in Susa the citadel, under custody of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women. Let their cosmetics be given them.And let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This pleased the king, and he did so.

The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish; the wisest counselors of Pharaoh give stupid counsel. How can you say to Pharaoh,“ I am a son of the wise, a son of ancient kings”?Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you that they might know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.The princes of Zoan have become fools, and the princes of Memphis are deluded; those who are the cornerstones of her tribes have made Egypt stagger.

The thoughts of the righteous are just; the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
