They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites,“ You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.

The Lord had warned Israel about women from other nations. He had said,“ You must not marry them. If you do, you can be sure they will turn your hearts toward their gods.” But Solomon continued to love them anyway. He wouldn’t give them up.

The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel,“ You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.

from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites,“ You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, because they will turn your heart away to follow their gods.” To these women Solomon was deeply attached in love.

They came from nations about which the LORD had warned the Israelites,“ You must not establish friendly relations with them! If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.” But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.

and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters whore after their gods and make your sons whore after their gods.

You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons,for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.

For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you,know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you.

While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab.These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.

You shall make no covenant with them and their gods.They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me; for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.”

Judah has been faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,“ I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

Do not be deceived:“ Bad company ruins good morals.”

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

And as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took for his wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal and worshiped him.He erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria.And Ahab made an Asherah. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.

And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra:“ We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done according to the Law.Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it.”Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem,and that if anyone did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles.Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them,“ You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel.Now then make confession to the Lord, the God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.”Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice,“ It is so; we must do as you have said.But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a task for one day or for two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.Let our officials stand for the whole assembly. Let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, until the fierce wrath of our God over this matter is turned away from us.”Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of fathers’ houses, according to their fathers’ houses, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter;and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.

After this he loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her,“ Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”So Delilah said to Samson,“ Please tell me where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could subdue you.”Samson said to her,“ If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.”Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she bound him with them.Now she had men lying in ambush in an inner chamber. And she said to him,“ The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he snapped the bowstrings, as a thread of flax snaps when it touches the fire. So the secret of his strength was not known.Then Delilah said to Samson,“ Behold, you have mocked me and told me lies. Please tell me how you might be bound.”And he said to her,“ If they bind me with new ropes that have not been used, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.”So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him,“ The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And the men lying in ambush were in an inner chamber. But he snapped the ropes off his arms like a thread.Then Delilah said to Samson,“ Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you might be bound.” And he said to her,“ If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and fasten it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.”So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks of his head and wove them into the web. And she made them tight with the pin and said to him,“ The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled away the pin, the loom, and the web.And she said to him,“ How can you say,‘ I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me where your great strength lies.”And when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death.And he told her all his heart, and said to her,“ A razor has never come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If my head is shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak and be like any other man.”When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying,“ Come up again, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands.She made him sleep on her knees. And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him.And she said,“ The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said,“ I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.And the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze shackles. And he ground at the mill in the prison.

And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?

Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’

But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat,“ Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the Lord.
