And the troop of Philistines encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.And David said with longing,“ Oh, that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord.And he said,“ Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this! Is this not the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men.Now Abishai the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of another three. He lifted his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name among these three.Was he not the most honored of three? Therefore he became their captain. However, he did not attain to the first three.Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds. He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.And he killed an Egyptian, a spectacular man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand; so he went down to him with a staff, wrested the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and won a name among three mighty men.He was more honored than the thirty, but he did not attain to the first three. And David appointed him over his guard.Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,Heleb the son of Baanah( the Netophathite), Ittai the son of Ribai from Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai from the brooks of Gaash,Abi-Albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,Eliahba the Shaalbonite( of the sons of Jashen), Jonathan,Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite,Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,Hezrai the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite,Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite( armorbearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah),Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,and Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.

Sheva was scribe; Zadok and Abiathar were the priests;

the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves;

“ But the priests, the Levites, the sons of Zadok, who kept charge of My sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from Me, they shall come near Me to minister to Me; and they shall stand before Me to offer to Me the fat and the blood,” says the Lord GOD.

The third captain of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, who was chief; in his division were twenty-four thousand.This was the Benaiah who was mighty among the thirty, and was over the thirty; in his division was Ammizabad his son.

that the king said to Nathan the prophet,“ See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”Then Nathan said to the king,“ Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,

Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him:“ There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor.The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds.But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him.And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan,“ As the Lord lives, the man who has done this shall surely die!And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.”Then Nathan said to David,“ You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel:‘ I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more!Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon.Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’Thus says the Lord:‘ Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.’”So David said to Nathan,“ I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David,“ The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”Then Nathan departed to his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became ill.

Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; Seraiah was the scribe;Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief ministers.

The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.

Now these were the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel.And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam the son of a Hachmonite, chief of the captains; he had lifted up his spear against three hundred, killed by him at one time.After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.He was with David at Pasdammim. Now there the Philistines were gathered for battle, and there was a piece of ground full of barley.
