But one son of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled to David.Abiathar informed David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.Then David said to Abiathar,“ I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would certainly tell Saul. I myself have turned against every person in your father’s household.Stay with me; do not be afraid, even though he who is seeking my life is seeking your life. For you are safe with me.”

The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers conspire together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

Now Joab was in command of the entire army of Israel, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites;

Then to Abiathar the priest the king said,“ Go to Anathoth to your own field, for you deserve to die; but I will not put you to death at this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and because you were afflicted in everything with which my father was afflicted.”So Solomon dismissed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, to fulfill the word of the Lord, which He had spoken regarding the house of Eli in Shiloh.Now the news came to Joab because Joab had followed Adonijah, though he had not followed Absalom. So Joab fled to the tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns of the altar.And it was reported to King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord, and was beside the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying,“ Go, execute him.”So Benaiah came to the tent of the Lord and said to him,“ This is what the king has said:‘ Come out.’ ” But he said,“ No, for I will die here.” So Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying,“ This is what Joab spoke, and so he answered me.”And the king said to him,“ Do just as he has spoken, and execute him and bury him, so that you may remove from me and from my father’s house the blood which Joab shed without justification.The Lord will return his blood on his own head, because he struck two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, while my father David did not know about it: Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.So their blood shall return on the head of Joab and on the head of his descendants forever; but for David and his descendants, and his house and his throne, may there be peace from the Lord forever.”Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and struck him and put him to death, and he was buried at his own house in the wilderness.And the king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in his place, and the king appointed Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.

Joab the son of Zeruiah was commander over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was secretary.

And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong, for the people continually increased with Absalom.

Now behold, Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him, carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and Abiathar came up until all the people had finished crossing over from the city.And the king said to Zadok,“ Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the sight of the Lord, then He will bring me back and show me both it and His habitation.But if He says this:‘ I have no delight in you,’ then here I am, let Him do to me as seems good to Him.”The king also said to Zadok the priest,“ Are you not a seer? Return to the city in peace, and your two sons with you, your son Ahimaaz and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.See, I am going to wait at the river crossing places of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”So Zadok and Abiathar returned the ark of God to Jerusalem and remained there.

Are Zadok and Abiathar the priests not with you there? So it shall be that whatever you hear from the king’s house, you shall report to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
