About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting,“ I will make myself king.” So he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him.

Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said,“ I will be king.” So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him.

Now Adonijah, son of David and Haggith, was promoting himself, boasting,“ I will be king!” He managed to acquire chariots and horsemen, as well as fifty men to serve as his royal guard.

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying,“ I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

After this, Absalom bought a chariot and horses, and he hired fifty bodyguards to run ahead of him.

The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith. The fifth was Shephatiah, whose mother was Abital.

And from among my sons— for the Lord has given me many— he chose Solomon to succeed me on the throne of Israel and to rule over the Lord’s kingdom.

But you still lord it over my people and refuse to let them go.

If this happens, be sure to select as king the man the Lord your God chooses. You must appoint a fellow Israelite; he may not be a foreigner.“ The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself or send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you,‘ You must never return to Egypt.’

Then King David turned to the entire assembly and said,“ My son Solomon, whom God has clearly chosen as the next king of Israel, is still young and inexperienced. The work ahead of him is enormous, for the Temple he will build is not for mere mortals— it is for the Lord God himself!

Israel is full of silver and gold; there is no end to its treasures. Their land is full of warhorses; there is no end to its chariots.

I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

“ Ask the leading citizens of Shechem whether they want to be ruled by all seventy of Gideon’s sons or by one man. And remember that I am your own flesh and blood!”

The third was Absalom, whose mother was Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith.

Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.

The Lord has confirmed me and placed me on the throne of my father, David; he has established my dynasty as he promised. So as surely as the Lord lives, Adonijah will die this very day!”

Then Nathan went to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and asked her,“ Haven’t you heard that Haggith’s son, Adonijah, has made himself king, and our lord David doesn’t even know about it?

For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

David said,“ My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced. And since the Temple to be built for the Lord must be a magnificent structure, famous and glorious throughout the world, I will begin making preparations for it now.” So David collected vast amounts of building materials before his death.Then David sent for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a Temple for the Lord, the God of Israel.“ My son, I wanted to build a Temple to honor the name of the Lord my God,” David told him.“ But the Lord said to me,‘ You have killed many men in the battles you have fought. And since you have shed so much blood in my sight, you will not be the one to build a Temple to honor my name.But you will have a son who will be a man of peace. I will give him peace with his enemies in all the surrounding lands. His name will be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign.He is the one who will build a Temple to honor my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will secure the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’“ Now, my son, may the Lord be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the Lord your God.
