The one who does not love remains in death.Everyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.If anyone has this world’s goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from him— how does God’s love reside in him?

If I speak human or angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

If we say,“ We have fellowship with him,” and yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth.

and know his will, and approve the things that are superior, being instructed from the law,and if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light to those in darkness,an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of the immature, having the embodiment of knowledge and truth in the law—you then, who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach,“ You must not steal”— do you steal?

“ If you were blind,” Jesus told them,“ you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say,‘ We see,’ your sin remains.
