雖然、吾所書者、亦可謂之新誡命、主所體認、亦爾等所體認者也。蓋暗昧寖消、而真光已著矣。

再者，我写给你们的，是一条新命令，在主是真的，在你们也是真的；因为黑暗渐渐过去，真光已经照耀。

我復將新誡致書以傳爾、在主乃真、在爾亦真、蓋晦暗方過、而真光已照也、

Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

But I am writing what amounts to a new command. Its truth was shown in how Jesus lived. It is also shown in how you live. That’s because the darkness is passing away. And the true light is already shining.

惟彼真光。普照生靈。凡生於世。資之以明。

予茲授爾以新誡、即彼此相愛是已、務以予之所以愛爾者、彼此相愛也。

蓋斯世之君、已矇不信者之心、以致基督榮耀福音之真光、亦無由照入；而基督固天主之肖影也。蓋吾人決不作自我宣傳、惟知宣揚吾主耶穌基督；而吾人則因耶穌之故、而充爾等之僕人者耳。夫天主昔嘗作光於黑暗之中矣、今乃照耀於吾人之心中、俾吾人得藉基督耶穌之聖容、而洞識天主之光榮。

不寧惟是、凡愛天主者、亦當愛其兄弟、此固吾人所受於天主之明誡也。

愛友乎、天主如此垂愛吾人、則吾人亦宜彼此相愛矣。

須知吾輩已因實行友愛之道、而出死入生，而彼不具愛德者、則依然未脫死域也。凡嫉惡其兄弟、罪同殺人；而殺人者、其無永生存乎其身、可知矣。吾主曾為吾人舍生致命、天主之愛德、於此可見。然則吾人亦宜為兄弟舍生致命矣。

吾誡非他、但欲爾等以吾之所以愛爾者、彼此相愛而已。人之愛、莫大於為其友舍生；爾能遵行吾之所命、是吾友也。今而後予不稱爾為僕、僕不知其主之所為也。吾稱爾為友者、蓋凡吾所聞於吾父者、悉以示爾矣。

耶穌曰：『光處爾曹之中、尚有片時、及爾有光、爾當勉行、毋使暗冥襲爾、行於黑暗中者、不自知其所往、

凡此皆為爾等之益也。爾等之得信奉天主、實賴基督之德、而天主者、則起基督於死者之中、而鍚以光榮者也。是故爾宜堅守信德、一心仰望天主。
