雖然、吾所書者、亦可謂之新誡命、主所體認、亦爾等所體認者也。蓋暗昧寖消、而真光已著矣。

Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

But I am writing what amounts to a new command. Its truth was shown in how Jesus lived. It is also shown in how you live. That’s because the darkness is passing away. And the true light is already shining.

這光是真光，來到這世界照亮每個人。

「我給你們一條新的命令：就是要你們彼此相愛，就如我愛你們，為要使你們也彼此相愛。

對於他們，這世代的神把這些不信之人的心眼弄瞎了，使他們不能洞察基督榮耀的福音之光。基督就是神的形像。實際上，我們不是傳揚自己，而是傳揚主耶穌基督，並且為了耶穌的緣故，我們自己做了你們的奴僕；因為那吩咐「要有光從黑暗裡照耀出來」的神，已經照耀了我們的心，為要發出神榮耀的知識之光——這光就在耶穌基督的臉上。

至於你們這些敬畏我名的人，必有公義的太陽為你們升起，它的光線帶來痊癒；你們必出來跳躍，像圈裡的牛犢。」

這是我們從基督所領受的命令：愛神的，也要愛自己的弟兄。

各位蒙愛的人哪，既然神如此愛我們，我們也應該彼此相愛。

我們知道，因為我們愛弟兄，我們就已經出死入生了；那不愛弟兄的，就住在死亡中。凡是恨自己弟兄的，就是殺人的，而你們知道：凡是殺人的，就沒有永恆的生命住在他裡面。我們從這一點就知道了愛：基督為我們捨棄了自己的生命，我們也應該為弟兄捨棄生命。

這是我的命令：你們要彼此相愛，就像我愛了你們那樣。一個人為他的朋友捨棄自己的生命，人的愛沒有比這更大的了。你們如果遵行我所吩咐的事，你們就是我的朋友了。我不再稱你們為奴僕，因為奴僕不知道主人所做的事。我卻稱你們為朋友，因為我把從我父所聽到的一切，都讓你們明白了。

行在黑暗中的百姓，看見了大光；住在死蔭之地的人，有光照耀他們。

耶穌說：「光在你們當中的時候不多了。要趁著有光的時候行走，免得黑暗抓住你們！因為在黑暗裡行走的人，不知道自己往哪裡去。

藉著基督，你們信靠那使他從死人中復活、又賜他榮耀的神，以致你們的信仰和盼望也都在於神。
