But let me say this, dear brothers and sisters: The time that remains is very short. So from now on, those with wives should not focus only on their marriage.

What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not;

This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.

Look here, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog— it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.What you ought to say is,“ If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.

So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore.For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.

Those who use the things of the world should not become attached to them. For this world as we know it will soon pass away.

And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

“ Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is.You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” InterludeWe are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.

That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.

You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning.In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered.We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury.You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins— and you see them all.We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan.Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.

A voice said,“ Shout!” I asked,“ What should I shout?”“ Shout that people are like the grass. Their beauty fades as quickly as the flowers in a field.The grass withers and the flowers fade beneath the breath of the Lord. And so it is with people.The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.”

As the Scriptures say,“ People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades.

Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.

But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.“ Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher,“ completely meaningless.”

In the few days of our meaningless lives, who knows how our days can best be spent? Our lives are like a shadow. Who can tell what will happen on this earth after we are gone?

Look! The Lord is about to destroy the earth and make it a vast wasteland. He devastates the surface of the earth and scatters the people.Priests and laypeople, servants and masters, maids and mistresses, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, bankers and debtors— none will be spared.

“ How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble!We blossom like a flower and then wither. Like a passing shadow, we quickly disappear.

Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die.The wind blows, and we are gone— as though we had never been here.
