You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.

爾猶自矜、而不哀傷、使行此者見擯於爾中、

猶妄自誇大、而不痛哭、使斁倫者、見擯於爾中、

爾猶妄自誇大、而不痛哭、使行此者、見除於爾中、

爾等尚驕矜自滿、而不痛自懲創、毅然擯絕如此亂倫忤逆之子耶。

And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?

And you are proud! Shouldn’t you be very sad instead? Shouldn’t you have thrown out of your church the man doing this?

And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

And you are arrogant! Shouldn’t you be filled with grief and remove from your congregation the one who did this?

You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst.

And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

And ye are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you.

And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation.

And you are proud! Shouldn’t you have been deeply sorrowful instead and removed the one who did this from among you?

You are arrogant, and didn’t mourn instead, that he who had done this deed might be removed from among you.

“ But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman— that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet— to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols.I gave her time to repent, but she does not want to turn away from her immorality.“ Therefore, I will throw her on a bed of suffering, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer greatly unless they repent and turn away from her evil deeds.

He said to him,“ Walk through the streets of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in their city.”

For the men of Israel have married women from these people and have taken them as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages. Worse yet, the leaders and officials have led the way in this outrage.”When I heard this, I tore my cloak and my shirt, pulled hair from my head and beard, and sat down utterly shocked.Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel came and sat with me because of this outrage committed by the returned exiles. And I sat there utterly appalled until the time of the evening sacrifice.At the time of the sacrifice, I stood up from where I had sat in mourning with my clothes torn. I fell to my knees and lifted my hands to the Lord my God.I prayed,“ O my God, I am utterly ashamed; I blush to lift up my face to you. For our sins are piled higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached to the heavens.

While Ezra prayed and made this confession, weeping and lying face down on the ground in front of the Temple of God, a very large crowd of people from Israel— men, women, and children— gathered and wept bitterly with him.Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, a descendant of Elam, said to Ezra,“ We have been unfaithful to our God, for we have married these pagan women of the land. But in spite of this there is hope for Israel.Let us now make a covenant with our God to divorce our pagan wives and to send them away with their children. We will follow the advice given by you and by the others who respect the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law of God.Get up, for it is your duty to tell us how to proceed in setting things straight. We are behind you, so be strong and take action.”So Ezra stood up and demanded that the leaders of the priests and the Levites and all the people of Israel swear that they would do as Shecaniah had said. And they all swore a solemn oath.Then Ezra left the front of the Temple of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. He spent the night there without eating or drinking anything. He was still in mourning because of the unfaithfulness of the returned exiles.

His presence was a joy, but so was the news he brought of the encouragement he received from you. When he told us how much you long to see me, and how sorry you are for what happened, and how loyal you are to me, I was filled with joy!I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while.Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.

And if you still refuse to listen, I will weep alone because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, because the Lord’s flock will be led away into exile.

Dear brothers and sisters, I have used Apollos and myself to illustrate what I’ve been saying. If you pay attention to what I have quoted from the Scriptures, you won’t be proud of one of your leaders at the expense of another.For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?You think you already have everything you need. You think you are already rich. You have begun to reign in God’s kingdom without us! I wish you really were reigning already, for then we would be reigning with you.

Kill them all— old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin right here at the Temple.” So they began by killing the seventy leaders.

You were sorry and humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I said against this city and its people— that this land would be cursed and become desolate. You tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the Lord.

God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say,“ You must remove the evil person from among you.”

Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into his tent, right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as everyone was weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.

Yes, I am afraid that when I come again, God will humble me in your presence. And I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins. You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure.

Some of you have become arrogant, thinking I will not visit you again.

Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?Get rid of the old“ yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.
