And you are proud! Shouldn’t you have been deeply sorrowful instead and removed the one who did this from among you?

爾猶自矜、而不哀傷、使行此者見擯於爾中、

猶妄自誇大、而不痛哭、使斁倫者、見擯於爾中、

爾猶妄自誇大、而不痛哭、使行此者、見除於爾中、

爾等尚驕矜自滿、而不痛自懲創、毅然擯絕如此亂倫忤逆之子耶。

And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?

And you are proud! Shouldn’t you be very sad instead? Shouldn’t you have thrown out of your church the man doing this?

And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.

And you are arrogant! Shouldn’t you be filled with grief and remove from your congregation the one who did this?

You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst.

And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation.

But I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and by her teaching deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.I have given her time to repent, but she is not willing to repent of her sexual immorality.Look! I am throwing her onto a bed of violent illness, and those who commit adultery with her into terrible suffering, unless they repent of her deeds.

The LORD said to him,“ Go through the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of the people who moan and groan over all the abominations practiced in it.”

Indeed, they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has become intermingled with the local residents. Worse still, the leaders and the officials have been at the forefront of all of this!”When I heard this report, I tore my tunic and my robe and ripped out some of the hair from my head and beard. Then I sat down, quite devastated.Everyone who held the words of the God of Israel in awe gathered around me because of the unfaithful acts of the people of the exile. Devastated, I continued to sit there until the evening offering.At the time of the evening offering I got up from my self-abasement, with my tunic and robe torn, and then dropped to my knees and spread my hands to the LORD my God.I prayed,“ O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God! For our iniquities have climbed higher than our heads, and our guilt extends to the heavens.

While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself to the ground before the temple of God, a very large crowd of Israelites– men, women, and children alike– gathered around him. The people wept loudly.Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, from the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra:“ We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the local peoples. Nonetheless, there is still hope for Israel in this regard.Therefore let us enact a covenant with our God to send away all these women and their offspring, in keeping with your counsel, my lord, and that of those who respect the commandments of our God. And let it be done according to the law.Get up, for this matter concerns you. We are with you, so be strong and act decisively!”So Ezra got up and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take an oath to carry out this plan. And they all took a solemn oath.Then Ezra got up from in front of the temple of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he stayed there, he did not eat food or drink water, for he was in mourning over the infidelity of the exiles.

We were encouraged not only by his arrival, but also by the encouragement you gave him, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning, your deep concern for me, so that I rejoiced more than ever.For even if I made you sad by my letter, I do not regret having written it( even though I did regret it, for I see that my letter made you sad, though only for a short time).Now I rejoice, not because you were made sad, but because you were made sad to the point of repentance. For you were made sad as God intended, so that you were not harmed in any way by us.For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.For see what this very thing, this sadness as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what punishment! In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

But if you will not pay attention to this warning, I will weep alone because of your arrogant pride. I will weep bitterly and my eyes will overflow with tears because you, the LORD’s flock, will be carried into exile.”

I have applied these things to myself and Apollos because of you, brothers and sisters, so that through us you may learn“ not to go beyond what is written,” so that none of you will be puffed up in favor of the one against the other.For who concedes you any superiority? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as though you did not?Already you are satisfied! Already you are rich! You have become kings without us! I wish you had become kings so that we could reign with you!

Old men, young men, young women, little children, and women– wipe them out! But do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary!” So they began with the elders who were at the front of the temple.

‘ You displayed a sensitive spirit and humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard how I intended to make this place and its residents into an appalling example of an accursed people. You tore your clothes and wept before me, and I have heard you,’ says the LORD.

But God will judge those outside. Remove the evil person from among you.

Tears stream down from my eyes, because people do not keep your law.צ( Tsade)

Just then one of the Israelites came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the plain view of Moses and of the whole community of the Israelites, while they were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

I am afraid that when I come again, my God may humiliate me before you, and I will grieve for many of those who previously sinned and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and licentiousness that they have practiced.

Some have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you.

turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast affects the whole batch of dough?Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough– you are, in fact, without yeast.
