For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings.

吾儕在亞西亞所遭遇之患難、不欲兄弟不之知也。當時吾儕所受之困阨、實非人力之所能當者、且自謂必不能倖免矣。然吾人之所以被處於絕境、以至於自分必死者、乃欲吾人勿恃本身之力量、而恃起死回生之天主耳。天主既脫吾儕於萬死、且至今猶時時予以保障、故吾儕將一切希望託付於主、深信其必保障到底。

啟五緘、則見為天主聖道而致命者之靈魂盤桓於祭臺之下、大聲而呼曰：「嗟夫、神聖、真實、至高無上之主、爾審判天下、伸吾儕流血之冤、將待何時？」於是各賜白袍一件、囑其少候、以待被害同人定數之齊全。

庶幾造次顛沛無所動心。蓋知受苦受難、實為吾人分內之事。

眾天神環繞寶座及諸老四靈物而立者、至是悉皆俯伏座前、頂禮天主曰：「願我天主受享一切頌讚、一切光榮、一切妙慧、一切稱謝、一切尊貴、一切權能、永世靡暨、心焉祝之！」時一老者詢予曰：「彼身着白袍者誰？何自而來也？」予應之曰：「公自知之。」渠乃語予曰：若輩來自憂患中、備嘗艱辛、曾藉羔羊之血、自濯其袍、所服皜皜乎不可尚已；

雖似無聞、而實則闇然日章也；雖似將死、而實則生氣蓬勃也；雖似受刑、而實則真我無恙也；

彼天神者、實悉為供職之神、天主所遣、以扶掖蒙救者耳。

蓋天主之恩召、非欲吾人嬰其震怒、乃欲吾人因吾主耶穌基督而沾溉救恩。基督之為吾人而死、亦欲吾人無論生前死後、與之共生而已。

主知心中事。焉能不發覺。

蓋爾所受之特寵、不惟在信仰基督、亦在為彼受難忍苦耳。已往予之奮鬥、爾所目擊；今之奮鬥、爾所耳聞；為主奮鬥、亦爾之分內事也。

亞細亞諸紳乃葆樂之友、亦遣人勸勿冒險而入。

於是全城騷動、眾執與葆樂同行之馬其頓人迦猶及亞里達古、蠭擁至戲園、

且吾儕之臨危蹈難、不遑寧息、所為何事乎？兄弟乎、爾等非我在耶穌基督身上之光榮乎？吾敢憑斯光榮而誓曰：我實無日不處死地。曩在伊弗所、予曾與猛獸格鬥矣；若依人之常情而論、我亦何樂而為此？若死者無復活、則『人生有酒須當醉、明日死來萬事休；』

更有人忍受戲弄鞭撻、桎梏縲絏、種種磨煉、

吾又見婦人已因暢飲眾聖及諸為耶穌致命者之血、而酩酊矣。吾對之不勝驚訝駭異之至。天神語予曰：胡驚異為？吾欲告爾以此婦及其所乘七首十角之獸之秘密。
