As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.“ I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

  • Matthew 21:23-44
Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”But Jesus answered and said to them,“ I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things:The baptism of John— where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And they reasoned among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say to us,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet.”So they answered Jesus and said,“ We do not know.” And He said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.“ But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said,‘ son, go, work today in my vineyard.’He answered and said,‘ I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it and went. Then he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said,‘ I go, sir,’ but he did not go.Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to Him,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward relent and believe him.“ Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?”They said to Him,“ He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures:‘ The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?“ Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

  • Isaiah 28:24-29
Does the plowman keep plowing all day to sow? Does he keep turning his soil and breaking the clods? When he has leveled its surface, Does he not sow the black cummin And scatter the cummin, Plant the wheat in rows, The barley in the appointed place, And the spelt in its place? For He instructs him in right judgment, His God teaches him.For the black cummin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, Nor is a cartwheel rolled over the cummin; But the black cummin is beaten out with a stick, And the cummin with a rod.Bread flour must be ground; Therefore he does not thresh it forever, Break it with his cartwheel, Or crush it with his horsemen. This also comes from the Lord of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance.

The weeds are the people of the evil one,and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.“ As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.“ Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled.I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.”The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress. (niv)

“ For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.“ About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’So they went.“ He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them,‘ Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’“‘ Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.“ He said to them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard.’“ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,‘ Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’“ The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.‘ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said,‘ and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’“ But he answered one of them,‘ I am not being unfair to you, friend. • Matthew 13:18-30
“ Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”Jesus told them another parable:“ The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.“ The owner’s servants came to him and said,‘ Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’“‘ An enemy did this,’ he replied.“ The servants asked him,‘ Do you want us to go and pull them up?’“‘ No,’ he answered,‘ because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” (niv)
