He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit. You are clean already because of the word that I have spoken to you.Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.“ I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me– and I in him– bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up.If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.

They sprang up quickly because the soil was not deep. But when the sun came up, they were scorched, and because they did not have sufficient root, they withered.Other seeds fell among the thorns, and they grew up and choked them. But other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty. The one who has ears had better listen!”
  • Matthew 21:23-44
Now after Jesus entered the temple courts, the chief priests and elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching and said,“ By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”Jesus answered them,“ I will also ask you one question. If you answer me then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from people?” They discussed this among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From people,’ we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Then he said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’The boy answered,‘ I will not.’ But later he had a change of heart and went. The father went to the other son and said the same thing. This boy answered,‘ I will, sir,’ but did not go.Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ I tell you the truth, tax collectors and prostitutes will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God!For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Although you saw this, you did not later change your minds and believe him.“ Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went on a journey. When the harvest time was near, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his portion of the crop. But the tenants seized his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again he sent other slaves, more than the first, and they treated them the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and get his inheritance!’So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”They said to him,“ He will utterly destroy those evil men! Then he will lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him his portion at the harvest.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the scriptures:‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?For this reason I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls will be crushed.”

  • Isaiah 28:24-29
Does a farmer just keep on plowing at planting time? Does he keep breaking up and harrowing his ground?Once he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter the seed of the caraway plant, sow the seed of the cumin plant, and plant the wheat, barley, and grain in their designated places? His God instructs him; he teaches him the principles of agriculture.Certainly caraway seed is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin seed. Certainly caraway seed is beaten with a stick, and cumin seed with a flail.Grain is crushed, though one certainly does not thresh it forever. The wheel of one’s wagon rolls over it, but his horses do not crush it.This also comes from the LORD who commands armies, who gives supernatural guidance and imparts great wisdom.

The weeds are the people of the evil one,and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.“ As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.“ Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled.I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.”The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress. (niv)

“ For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.“ About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’So they went.“ He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them,‘ Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’“‘ Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.“ He said to them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard.’“ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,‘ Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’“ The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.‘ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said,‘ and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’“ But he answered one of them,‘ I am not being unfair to you, friend. • Matthew 13:18-30
“ Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”Jesus told them another parable:“ The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.“ The owner’s servants came to him and said,‘ Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’“‘ An enemy did this,’ he replied.“ The servants asked him,‘ Do you want us to go and pull them up?’“‘ No,’ he answered,‘ because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” (niv)
