For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.

( Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.)

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud,and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as,“ Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”?Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them.These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them.

Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.This kind of talk spreads like cancer, as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus.They have left the path of truth, claiming that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; in this way, they have turned some people away from the faith.

“ O storm battered city, troubled and desolate! I will rebuild you with precious jewels and make your foundations from lapis lazuli.I will make your towers of sparkling rubies, your gates of shining gems, and your walls of precious stones.I will teach all your children, and they will enjoy great peace.

So I advise you to buy gold from me— gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.

The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass.

“ Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between straw and grain!

Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.

Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time.If people are causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with them.For people like that have turned away from the truth, and their own sins condemn them.

But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived.

These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold— though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.

In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,‘ These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.Their worship is a farce, for they teach man made ideas as commands from God.’”

They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.

How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!

“ But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin.

We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods. We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.

Choose my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.

If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed.Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.

And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them.

In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use.

Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life.

Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.

He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation.They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money.

You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us.

I will exchange your bronze for gold, your iron for silver, your wood for bronze, and your stones for iron. I will make peace your leader and righteousness your ruler.

Your instructions are more valuable to me than millions in gold and silver. Yodh
