For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death.But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written:“ Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because“ the righteous will live by faith.”The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says,“ The person who does these things will live by them.”Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written:“ Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.

I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

To Adam he said,“ Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you,‘ You must not eat from it,’“ Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Once more Jesus said to them,“ I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”

When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!

You turn people back to dust, saying,“ Return to dust, you mortals.”A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning:In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation.You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.
