When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Then Pilate ordered that it be released.So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen,and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.

There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin,who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body.Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.

So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.“ Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.“ He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,saying,‘ It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?”

After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

saying,“ It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”

because he has set a day when he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man he has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

For he was teaching his disciples and telling them,“ The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise three days later.”

From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.

They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”

Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb at sunrise.They were saying to one another,“ Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?”Looking up, they noticed that the stone— which was very large— had been rolled away.When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed.“ Don’t be alarmed,” he told them.“ You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him.But go, tell his disciples and Peter,‘ He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’”

After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb.There was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it.His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow.The guards were so shaken by fear of him that they became like dead men.The angel told the women,“ Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.He is not here. For he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body.Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died.When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.

They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus— but secretly because of his fear of the Jews— asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away.Nicodemus( who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes.They took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.There was a garden in the place where he was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it.They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby.On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them,“ They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.The wrapping that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself.The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed.For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.
